Tagore's "Laboratory" has been adapted for the Bengali stage. When Raja Sen decided to adapt it for celluloid, the expectations were high. Raveena Tandon was making her Tollywood debut opposite Arpita, who, in turn, was doing her first period film in her second innings (she had earlier done "Debdas" with Shakti Samanta).

Mohit Chattopadhyay was the script advisor for the project, Rana Dasgupta (who has done commendable work in 'Houseful') was behind the camera and Arghyakamal Mitra was in charge of editing. With such catalysts on board, Sen's experiment with Tagore wasn't as successful as it could have been.

"Laboratory" is about Sohini (Raveena), a girl from Punjab who married Bengali scientist Nandakishore (Sabyasachi). Following Nandakishore's untimely death, it fell upon Sohini to fulfil her husband's dream and for that, she was willing to pay any price, including indulging in a relationship with another man (professor Manmotho Chowdhury) or trying to get her daughter (Neela) hitched to a young scientist Reboti (Shaheb). Despite Sohini's single-minded obsession for the upkeep of the laboratory, things took a different turn once she started having conflicts with her daughter. In some ways, the film is about the clash between Sohini's dream and Neela's desire.

It's evident that Raveena has tried a lot. Her look and aggression suit Sohini's character. Even her real-life Punjabi roots, to some extent, provide ample justification for her speaking Bengali the way she does. But the problem arises when her expressions, at times, don't gel with the way she speaks her lines. It's not easy to have a willing suspension of disbelief when she is mouthing difficult Tagore's lines with an accented Bangla. Arpita's performance in this film is certainly better than her comeback vehicle, "Ekti Tarar Khonje". Ranjit Mallick is his usual self. Shaheb's portrayal of the meek and scholarly Reboti could have been better.

One wonders if the picturization of the scene of Shaheb dressed in a suit, sitting on a lawn and caressing Arpita's toe when the latter is taking a swing ride could have been any different from the way the director has imagined it to be.

Not all Bengali movies have the luxury of budget to recreate the period look of a movie. But contemporary audience, fed on a diet of period movies with high production value, could ask for better production design in Sen's movie without insisting on it being a lavish extravaganza like Sanjay Leela Bhansali's "Devdas". Perhaps, the film's pace could have been faster and the music more elaborate.

But all said and done, an attempt to draw the audience to cinema that's based on literature is commendable. In times when directors are happy ignoring literature as the springboard for making movies, Raja Sen's effort shouldn't go unrecognized.
